TEACHERS
Teachers can make a big impact in the classroom.
• Choose books for your classroom and school library that portray Indians as living, thriving cultures, not as victims of history.
The American Indian Library Association (an affiliate of the American Library Association) has has excellent publications and resources available to help with this.
• Organize a field trip to an American Indian history site or cultural event. When you are in the Washington, DC area make sure your class visits the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian
• Use a curriculum that teaches your students about American Indians in a respectful and factual manner, not simply as victims of the past. In particular, avoid role playing and costumes.
The Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian and the National Endowment of the Humanities have excellent resources for teachers. Both are good places to start when planning lessons.
• Hang a Running Strong American Indian Lands Map in your classroom. This beatiful map has information on and images of many North American tribes. Email us at
