FROM OUR HOUSING PROGRAMS |
Ken Lone Elk was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Nation. Ken is also a former Oglala Tribal Council member.
Ken became one of Running Strong's earliest volunteers, when he jumped in and lent a helping hand while we were building one of our first log-cabins in 1989.
Running Strong has long relied on Ken's expertise.Â
In the past 20 years, he has helped us: • repair homes for Oglala families • build many log-homes for Oglala families • build ramps for families with disabilities • Ken has served as the volunteer Director of our Water Well Development Program. Each year, he devotes countless unpaid hours to making sure that Oglala families get access to a much-needed source of water.
Ken married his wife, Noreen High Hawk, 40 years ago and they are proud of their 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
In 2008, Running Strong chose Ken and Noreen as the recipients of the proto-type Homes For Heroes house on the Pine Ridge Reservation to thank Ken for his tireless years of service to his people.Â
"Noreen and I are so grateful, words cannot express our gratitude to all of you for your kindness. Without you, we would have still been in our 26 year old mobile home. This home saw many children throughout the years that our children brought home for the weekend. Many of them still come around to visit and it will be a pleasure to have them come in and see our new home.
We will be having a house blessing in a few weeks, and we will pray for each of you and your families for a healthful new year, thank you."
