In June 2008, Running Strong began construction on the first "Homes for Heroes" house.
This new Running Strong Housing program honors long-term community volunteers, who are living in sub-standard housing, by building them a safe new home.
The program partners with a local nonprofit, the Wings of Eagles Training Center. Wings of Eagles trains Lakota workers in carpentry and home construction.
Each home for the Homes for Heroes program will be build by Wings of Eagles students, providing crucial training and employment in a poverty striken area.Â
The prototype Homes for Heroes house is 1,008 sq. feet, with two bedrooms, one bath.Â
The house was completed in December 2008 and construction on the next home will be begin in the fall of 2009.
